Nervous energy bubbled through my veins while pterodactyls took flight in my stomach. Even though I didn’t feel like I had it together on the inside, I thought I did a pretty good job of keeping a cool veneer.

“Hey, thanks, fellas. I really appreciate all the help here.”

Rico Cruz, one of Frankie’s brothers, patted me on the shoulder. “It’s the least we could do, man.”

“Yeah, Drunk. We owe you a lot. You got our sister out of the dungeon finally,” agreed his brother Diego.

“Listen, she earned that promotion herself. Frankie’s one amazing woman.”

Diego flashed me his palms. “Don’t get me wrong. I know my sister’s badass, but you helped get rid of her boss. There was no way she was moving up the ladder with that pendejo in charge.”

“Yeah, man. I’m thankful we got Gibson out too.”

With her brothers’ help, we’d decked out their smallest charter boat. We’d scattered rose petals across the deck. There were candles. Soft music. Dinner. The bottle of champagne I’d dropped twenty-nine ninety-five on sat in a bucket on the table next to the chocolates. Plus there was a fifth of tequila in the mini-fridge. I held the bouquet of flowers in my arms. I felt ready. It was time to take my friendship with Francesca Cruz to a whole new level.

The sex would just be a bonus.

I swallowed hard and tipped my head forward. Several dozen yards up the gangway in front of me, Miguel, another of Frankie’s six brothers, came out of the King’s Bay Marina office and started towards us. Beto and Solo Cruz followed behind him. When they were within earshot, I hollered at Miguel. “She coming?” My heart was in my throat. If Frankie didn’t come—all of this would have been for naught.

He nodded. “Yeah. I felt bad lying to her, though. She sounded freaked out when I told her we needed the police down here ASAP.”

“Don’t think of it as a lie, Miguel. Think of it as a means to an ends.” I smiled. “I’m about to make your sister very happy.”

“After all of this,” said Beto, “you better make our sister happy.”

“My brother’s right,” said Solo. “We’re giving you the benefit of the doubt here. You mess up, and that’s it. We don’t take kindly to people hurting our little sister.”

“Come on, Solo. You know I’d never hurt Frankie. I fell hard for the woman.”

“You aren’t the first to do that, Drunk,” said Rico. “Frankie’s a good woman.”

“I know she is. But haven’t I proven myself by now?”

Everyone turned to look at Solo, who let out a heavy sigh. We’d had our share of run-ins, but ultimately, I knew how he felt about me. I knew I’d finally secured his blessing to date his sister.

“You have,” he said stiffly. “Just don’t mess it up.”

I grinned from ear to ear. “Oh, don’t worry. I don’t intend to mess this up at all.” I let out a breath of relief. I felt like everything was finally in place. I was finally ready to commit to exclusively dating their sister.
